Authorities with Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office are investigating a Monday night shooting outside a Highway 45 convenience store that sent one person to the hospital.
The shooting occurred outside the Prairie Point Chevron station, said Sheriff Eddie Hawkins. The convenience store had just closed for the night when the victim parked in the parking lot and got out of his vehicle to walk toward the door. As he approached, shots were fired from another vehicle parked in the parking lot. The victim ran around the building and sought shelter at a nearby Dollar General where he called 911.
The victim was treated and released from Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle for a gunshot wound to the leg, Hawkins said. He did not see the shooters in the vehicle.
Several of the bullets struck the convenience store building and broke the windows. The employees “were ducking and covering” but were not injured and eventually called 911 from the store’s freezer where they barricaded themselves, Hawkins said.
As of Wednesday evening, authorities had not made any arrests, but Hawkins said there were two persons of interest in the case.
