The Mississippi Highway Patrol District 5 will increase the number of troopers it has on a patrol for the Fourth of July weekend, according to Master Sgt. Criss Turnipseed with MHP.
Twelve additional officers will patrol highways in District 5, which includes Clay, Lowndes and Oktibbeha counties, through the weekend, Turnipseed said. That number includes five extra troopers on Friday and Saturday and two extra troopers Sunday.
On a typical weekend, only about 20 troopers patrol a day.
The increase in patrols for the weekend is due mainly to the Fourth of July weekend being a time of heavier travel, Turnipseed said.
“The more people traveling, the more accidents there are at risk to have,” he said.
The troopers will be on the look out for seatbelt violations, drunk drivers and other typical traffic violations, Turnipseed said.
The Highway Patrol Troop G patrols ten counties, including Monroe, Chickasaw, Winston, Lowndes, Oktibbeha and Noxubee Counties.
