Summer is once again heating up, and local bands are warming up with it.
Main Street Columbus Executive Director Barbara Bigelow said Sounds of the Summer, an outdoor concert series, is returning this summer on June 13.
“It’s a lot of fun,” Bigelow told The Dispatch. “It’s a free community event. Something for our community to do on just a few Thursday evenings in the summertime.”
Sounds of the Summer is a joint collaboration with the Columbus-Lowndes Chamber of Commerce, Bigelow said, which has happened every year since 2009, with a one-year break for the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.
This year, the series will be returning to a stage in the grassy area at the Roger Short Soccer Complex, Bigelow said. The Bouncing Betties will be performing June 13, while The Silver Eagle Band will perform June 27 and the Shane Tubbs Band will perform July 11, with shows running from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
“It’s a good opportunity to showcase our local entertainment,” Bigelow said.
Bigelow said food and drink vendors will be on site, but admission to the concerts is free. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs and blankets to sit on throughout the concerts. Anyone and everyone in the community is invited to come out.
“This event offers a fantastic networking opportunity for our Chamber members and a wonderful chance for our community to come together and have fun,” Katie Fenstermacher, director of programs and events with the Columbus-Lowndes Chamber of Commerce, said in a press release. “We are also excited about our partnership with Main Street Columbus to host incredible local artists for free.”
Bigelow said the series is a local favorite, as citizens of Columbus ask her about the summer series year-round, hoping to get a sneak peek at the bands that are lined up for the family friendly shows.
“We always have a great turnout and people really do enjoy it,” Bigelow said. “It’s one of those events where people can kind of come and go. They may get there at 6:15 (p.m.) or so and enjoy the first part of the concert and then roll out, and someone else may eat and come later.”
No pets or coolers are allowed at the shows, Bigelow said, but families are encouraged to bring out soccer balls, frisbees or other games for their children.
