Live music will soon echo from the banks of the Columbus Riverwalk. The annual Sounds of Summer concert series begins Thursday with the Juke Joint Gypsies entertaining from 7-9 p.m. Additional concert dates and featured bands are June 18 with Poor House Bound, July 9 with Swing Shift, and July 23 with Keith and Margie Brown.
The series that began in 2008 is a joint venture of Main Street Columbus and the Columbus-Lowndes Chamber of Commerce. For a fourth year, the Southeast Tourism Society has named Sounds of Summer one of the Top 20 Events in the Southeast for June and July.
“Sounds of Summer is a diverse, quality event that offers something for everyone while showcasing our community and local talent,” said Barbara Bigelow, director of Main Street Columbus. “Bring your blankets, chairs, family and friends and enjoy fabulous local entertainment on our beautiful Columbus Riverwalk. We are so appreciative of our business sponsors and volunteers who make this event possible.”
The Juke Joint Gypsies’ Dawn Barham added, “We’re excited about kicking off Sounds of Summer. The Riverwalk is a wonderful venue and SOS is certainly a favorite gig for us.” She said the band is grateful not only for being asked to perform but for the organizers who sponsor the series for the community.
The family-friendly concerts offer food and beverages available for purchase.
Columbus-Lowndes Chamber of Commerce President Joey Bragg remarked, “Sounds of Summer is an outstanding event that we take great pride in participating in every year. Community businesses and organizations bringing quality, family events to our area is the kind of programming we’re all about.”
Organizers expressed thanks to the series’ presenting sponsors, which include CSpire; Lisa Younger-Neese, Chancery Clerk; Neel-Schaffer; Cadence Bank; Bank of Vernon; Children’s Health Center; Phillips Contracting Co. and the volunteers who make the events possible.
