Children have a lot of responsibilities to their parents and these are just a few:
• Honor their mother and father – Being a child comes with responsibilities, especially when it comes to honoring their parents. When we honor our parents, we’re honoring God first because He commanded us to honor them. In doing so, we will live a long time. “Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.” (Exodus 20:12) KJV
• Love their parents – As children, our responsibilities extend to showing love and appreciation to our parents. Expressing our love goes beyond mere words; it includes our actions and attitudes. By loving our parents, we not only fulfill our responsibilities but also reflect our love for God. “As the Father hath loved me, so have I loved you: continue ye in my love.” (John 15:9) KJV
• Listen to their parents – Listening to our parents is the key to understanding our responsibilities as children. They have experienced life and accumulated insights that can guide us through our own experience. If we listen to them, we won’t make the same mistakes they made. “Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction and do not forsake your mother’s teaching.” (Proverbs 1:8) NIV
• Support their parents – When our parents age, it becomes our responsibility to support our parents by looking after them just as they once did for us. Supporting our parents show appreciation for their years of care and guidance. “But if she has children or grandchildren, their first responsibility is to show godliness at home and repay their parents by taking care of them. This is something that pleases God.” (1 Timothy 5:4) NLT
• Obey their parents – Children’s responsibility is to be obedient to their parents. Obedience to our parents is not just a simple request; it is a way to please God. By obeying our parents, we learn valuable lessons about responsibility which will serve us well as we grow and enter adulthood. “Children, obey your parents in all things: for this is well pleasing unto the Lord.” (Colossians 3:20) KJV
• Respect their parent’s authority – One of the most valuable responsibilities children can learn is to respect their parents’ authority. This respect is not just when they are right or when it’s convenient for us; it’s a consistent attitude we carry that embodies love and admiration for the role our parents play in our lives. “Each of you must show great respect for your mother and father, and you must always observe my Sabbath days of rest. I am the Lord your God.” (Leviticus 19:3) NLT
So be encouraged today children and always remember: When we do these responsibilities for our parents, we will make them glad. “So give your father and mother joy! May she who gave you birth be happy.” (Proverbs 23:25) NLT
Happy children day!
