God is our ultimate source of comfort. He’s always ready to provide comfort during our troubling thoughts and worries, not only in our circumstances but also in our soul. “In the multitude of my thoughts within me thy comforts delight my soul” (Psalm 94:19, KJV).
We all experience moments of pain, loneliness and sorrow in our lives. When we allow ourselves to grieve, we invite God into our hearts and open ourselves to his comforting presence. His comfort goes far beyond any ordinary kind of comfort and fills the deepest voids within us. It reassures us in times of grief or uncertainty that we are never alone. “You who are my comforter in sorrow, my heart is faint within me” (Jeremiah 8:18, NIV).
Even in our time of death, we don’t have to be afraid because God is a God who comforts us. His rod and staff bring us comfort and security even in our darkest hours as a protector and guide, bringing us comfort through his care and provision. “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me” (Psalm 23:4, KJV).
Despite the obstacles that may bombard us, God will increase our greatness and bring comfort that we can rest upon. His comfort surrounds us from every side and helps us overcome adversity. When we embrace this level of greatness, we find ourselves transformed and empowered by the Holy Spirit, leading us to fulfill our purpose in life. “Thou shalt increase my greatness, and comfort me on every side” (Psalm 71:21, KJV).
When we’re going through our personal trials and tribulations, God will comfort us so that we will be equipped to comfort others. We are called not only to receive comfort but also to give it. When we have been comforted, we become more sensitive to others who are facing similar trials. “Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God” (2 Corinthians 1:4, KJV).
No matter what challenges we are facing – stress at work, school pressures or personal losses – God promises his comfort and hope. Hope is what motivates us to keep going when things get tough and reminds us of the depth of God’s everlasting love and comfort. “Now may our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who loved us and by his grace gave us eternal comfort and a wonderful hope” (2 Thessalonians 2:16, NLT).
So be encouraged today and always remember: There is no real and lasting comfort apart from what God can give. “Comfort ye, comfort ye my people, saith your God” (Isaiah 40:1, KJV).
