Life is a series of problems; every time we solve one, another one is waiting to take its place. However, God has a purpose behind every problem we go through to do these things in our lives.
• Draw us closer to Him. Some of our hearts have been broken from deep emotional wounds, loss, betrayal or disappointment. God understands what we’re experiencing when we feel broken and crushed in spirit, and He is near, reassuring us that we’re not alone in our pain. His purpose behind our problems is not to abandon us when we’re hurting but to draw us closer to Him. “The Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.” (Psalm 34:18 KJV)
• Protect us from harm. The very people who plot evil schemes against us will be the same people we will have to help. So don’t lose heart when faced with evil intentions from others. Instead, allow God’s purpose to unfold behind our problems. What people mean for harm, God will use for our good. “You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives.” (Genesis 50:20 NIV)
• Direct our steps. Oftentimes, we make plans with the best intentions, but it is the Lord who truly directs our steps. We can be certain that God’s purpose behind our problems will align our hearts with His will and shape us in the process. “A man’s heart plans his way, but the Lord directs his steps.” (Proverbs 16:9 NKJV)
• Build our character. It’s through the problems we face and the suffering we go through that our character is built. Suffering does not mean denying the difficulties or pretending everything is fine. It allows us to embrace perseverance and hold on to our hope. Then we can see the bright future and possibilities God has for us behind our problems. “Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope.” (Romans 5:3-4 NIV)
• Correct us. When we encounter challenges or hardships, it can be easy to feel discouraged. These experiences are opportunities for growth. God wants what is best for us. His correction aims to guide and teach us to walk in His ways. He does not discipline us to punish us but to prepare us for the greater purpose He has behind our problems. “Blessed is the one whom God corrects; so, do not despise the discipline of the Almighty.” (Job 5:17 NIV)
So be encouraged today, and always remember God’s purpose is to use our problems for good, to make us better and stronger. “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are called according to his purpose.” (Romans 8:28 KJV)
