COLUMBUS — Columbus Middle School will host the annual Secondary Performing Arts Festival this weekend, offering two days of performances and technical theatre presentations from middle and high school students across the region.
The first day of the festival ran from 5-9 p.m. Friday and continues from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at Columbus Middle School, 175 Highway 373. Tickets are $5 and provide entry for the entire weekend.
Designed for schools with developing theatre programs or groups new to competition, the event includes a range of individual performance categories on Friday. Students may enter solo, duet and group musical theatre; solo acting with contrasting monologues; duet acting; or group acting events involving three to 15 students. Performances must begin with a slate identifying the piece, may not exceed six minutes and must follow festival guidelines. Musical selections must come from published musicals, and acting material may be drawn from plays, monologue books or original student writing.
The festival also features individual technical theatre events in costume design, scenic design, makeup design, lighting design, sound design, stage management and costume construction. Technical entries must be based on a play or musical – real or imagined – and begin with a slate crediting the production. Presentations run three to eight minutes and outline each student’s research and design process.
Saturday’s schedule is dedicated to one-act productions presented by participating schools. Columbus Middle School captured regional attention last year by winning Best One-Act Production for the first time, along with Best Costumes and Best Ensemble.
Rubrics for all events are available upon request after registration.
