Columbus Arts Council is continuing its mission of promoting the arts to the youth of the community with its summer arts camp.
“We are offering our summer arts camp again,” said Salem Gibson, executive director for the organization. “We’ve done it for years and we are excited to continue to allow it to grow. It’s a morning camp, and there are usually 20-25 kids attending each week.”
There will be three weekly camps held in July. They are July 10-14, 17-21 and 24-28.
Registration for the camp is $99 per child per week, and the first two weeks have already sold out. There is limited availability for the final week.
Gibson said this participation highlights the growth of the program over the years.
“Every year, we are getting nothing but positive feedback from the community,” he said. “It sells out really within the first two to three weeks. It’s exciting and we take that into context. As we see that the demand is high, we are going to continue to offer it.”
The camp focuses on a variety of disciplines, allowing participants to have exposure to multiple forms of art.
“We are going to be experimenting with all forms of art,” Gibson said. “Each day, the kids will come and be able to try a new form of art and figure out what best fits them. From studio to improv and some music, we kind of cover the full spectrum of art; as well as drawing, painting, sculpting. It’s one of those camps where it’s an experimental camp. It’s designed to allow kids to figure out what form of art they are into. We figured out, in the last few years, that the best way to do that is to offer a real spectrum of art forms.”
The hope is that the kids will find something they are passionate about and CAC can continue facilitating that for them.
“Once we find out where the kids are and what they are into, we can help direct them,” Gibson said. “We definitely want CAC to be the information hub when it comes to arts and culture. So when you come to us, whether we have this to offer or not, we want to be able to direct you where you need to go next.”
He added that programs like this are possible because of the organization’s volunteers.
There are six volunteers helping this year.
“We are always very supportive of our volunteers,” Gibson said. “Each year we get a handful of young artists and people that want to support the youth in our community and are willing to give their time and volunteer for CAC. If anyone’s ever interested in getting involved, we are one call away.”
