The Hitching Lot Farmers’ Market will return for its 2026 season in downtown Columbus, offering fresh produce, handmade goods and family-friendly activities from May through October.
“The Hitching Lot Farmers’ Market is more than just a place to shop – it’s a place where community comes together,” said Barbara Bigelow, executive director of Main Street Columbus. “We are excited to welcome everyone back for another season of supporting local farmers and enjoying all that our region has to offer.”
The market will be held at the corner of Second Street and Second Avenue North, providing a space for residents and visitors to connect with local farmers, artisans and the community.
Market hours are Tuesdays from 4 to 6 p.m. and Saturdays from 7 to 10 a.m., with Saturday-only hours in September and October. The grand opening is scheduled for May 9, and will feature music, Mother Goose Storytime, Lowndes County Master Gardeners, glitter tattoos, hair tinsel and Kids Entrepreneur Day.
Children ages 6-16 may still sign up to be vendors for the grand opening. Participants must grow or create their own products. For details, contact the Main Street Columbus office.
Established in 1976, the Hitching Lot Farmers’ Market has long served as a cornerstone of Columbus’ local food movement, supporting regional growers and promoting healthy lifestyles through access to fresh, seasonal products. Today, the market continues that tradition with offerings that include fruits and vegetables, baked goods, canned items and handcrafted products.
Chelsea Best, farmers’ market coordinator, said organizers hope for strong community support and vendor participation.
“This is the 50th year of the Hitching Lot Farmers’ Market, and we hope that shoppers will make it a weekly part of their routine,” Best said.
Throughout the season, visitors can enjoy special events and themed market days designed to engage families and highlight local talent, including live music, educational opportunities and interactive activities.
The market is operated through a partnership between the city of Columbus and Main Street Columbus, with support from volunteers committed to fostering a strong local economy and encouraging healthy living.
