Many are probably familiar with “The Sound of Music” whether it be from the motion picture or a stage performance, most people have probably seen it.
Columbus has as well, but it has been years since then.
“This production was last seen at the Princess Theatre back in the early 90s with cast and crew still living here in Columbus,” said Golden Triangle Theatre Executive Director Garrett Torbert.
The organization is bringing the show back to Columbus nearly 30 years later, with performances on Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at the Seventh Street Centre Theatre. There will also be a cocktail hour before the Friday and Saturday shows.
“We are excited to bring it back to life and showcase this beautiful Austrian family and musical story,” Torbert said.
The preparation for the show began in January with auditions.
From there, the rehearsals, stage design and the numerous other aspects of a play were in full swing.
“There are roughly 60 people involved in this production if you include the actors, costumers, stagehands and orchestral musicians,” Torbert said. “The work for this show is great. I think the most challenging thing has been costuming because there are so many different looks for the children and everyone else. Wanda Mcyntire has done an excellent job reproducing some of these iconic looks. We are grateful for her talents.”
The choice of shows took several factors into consideration, and each was weighed carefully to provide the best opportunity for community involvement.
“We wanted to present something that was familiar to the community, but also to find a way to incorporate children,” he said. “Our whole mission is to nurture young people in our community through the arts and this musical brings that.”
Tickets for the show are on sale, and can be purchased online at goldentriangletheatre.com or in person at T.E. Lott and Company. General admission is $30 for adults, $15 for children.
Torbert said the show promises to be an entertaining experience.
“People can expect it to be magical,” he said. “We will have a live orchestra and a beautiful nun’s chorus and so many other elements help make this show so wonderful.”
