Middle school students across the Golden Triangle – including Starkville, Columbus, and West Point – have a chance to put their civic smarts to the test. The CREATE Foundation, in partnership with the Community Development Foundation and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation, is bringing the National Civics Bee® to Mississippi, offering students a hands-on way to learn about democracy, leadership, and community problem-solving.
“The Civics Bee gives students a platform to develop their voices, learn how government works, and see how they can make a difference in their communities,” said Suzy Bowman, CREATE Foundation’s director of regional impact. “We’re excited to bring this opportunity to Mississippi students.”
The competition is open to students in grades 6–8 and begins with a short essay describing a local community challenge and how the student would address it through civic engagement. Selected participants advance to live local competitions, answering civics questions and presenting their ideas before a panel of judges. Top performers can move on to the state finals, and winners may advance to the National Civics Bee® Championship in Washington, D.C., where they compete for prizes and national recognition.
Students in public, private, charter, and homeschool programs in the Golden Triangle and across Mississippi are encouraged to apply. Applications are free, and the deadline has been extended to Feb. 17. For contest rules, eligibility, and submission instructions, visit www.nationalcivicsbee.org.
