While Felder Rushing often appears in The Dispatch with his “In the Garden with Felder” column on gardening advice, it is not every day that he comes to Columbus.

On Sept. 23, Rushing will be giving a chat from the back of his pickup truck, his signature mobile garden, at the Hitching Lot Farmers’ Market starting at 10 a.m, according to a press release from Columbus Main Street.

“I love yakking with folks about gardening simply, and where better than from the back of my antique pickup truck with a real garden in the back?” Rushing said in an email to The Dispatch.  “A real truck garden at a truck farm market! And I know a lot of gardeners are struggling with serious weather-related issues, so this is a perfect venue to throw out some ideas and answer questions about what I’m doing in my own ravaged garden.”

Rushing’s talk will cover “Passalong Heirloom Flowers and Veggies.” It will also cover container gardening for winter flowers, herbs and veggies, and weather damage, along with questions from the audience.

According to his blog, Rushing is an 11th-generation American gardener who has written more than 25 gardening books and has contributed to others. He has also written thousands of articles on gardening for various publications for more than 40 years. But Rushing may be best known for his weekly “The Gestalt Gardener” radio program on National Public Radio.

“Be sure to bring your lawn chairs and be ready to enjoy a few laughs as Felder always keeps things fun and lively, providing expert information with a comedic tone,” Barbara Bigelow, Executive Director of Main Street Columbus said in the release.

Rushing said he is excited to come out to the farmer’s market, as it gives him an opportunity to talk with fellow gardeners and to enjoy the market itself.

“Columbus events always have a great turnout of garden variety gardeners, ‘non-joiners’ who may not attend garden club or Master Gardener classes, so this is a fantastic opportunity to rub shoulders with fellow diggers of the dirt,” Rushing said. “And there are so many different home-grown, home-made vendors to visit with and support!”

While Rushing’s visit adds excitement to the day, Hitching Lot Farmers’ Market Coordinator Chelsea Best also said the farmer’s market is open for its normal hours on Sept. 23 and encouraged shoppers to come out before the talk to enjoy the market.

“Be sure to come early and take advantage of shopping from our local farmers’ market vendors,” Best said in the release. “The market is open from 7-10 a.m.”

The Hitching Lot Farmers’ Market is located at the corner of 2nd Street and 2nd Avenue in downtown Columbus. It is open from May through October each year, and includes seasonal produce, baked goods and local crafts.

The market typically meets every Monday from 4-6 p.m., Thursday from 7-10 a.m. and Saturday from 7-10 a.m. throughout the months of May through September. It meets only on Saturdays in October.
