Legendary Vernon, Alabama singer, songwriter and producer Dan Penn and his longtime collaborator Dewey Lindon “Spooner” Oldham will perform together in Penn’s hometown of Vernon at 7 p.m. Aug. 2 at the Vernon City Complex, which is the old Vernon High School.
Penn, born Wallace Daniel Pennington on November 16, 1941 will turn 84 this year. Penn performed on the same stage in high school in Vernon as a teen. Together, Penn and Oldham have collaborated on a long list of hit songs in the ‘60s and ‘70s such as “Do Right Man, Do Right Woman,” recorded by the legendary Aretha Franklin in 1967.
During his concerts, Penn will often tell the story of the day that Aretha recorded the massive hit at Fame Recording Studio in Muscle Shoals. The songwriting duo also penned “I’m Your Puppet,” recorded by James and Bobby Purify. His songwriting credits also include “Dark End Of The Street” and many more! In 2015, Rolling Stone Magazine listed Penn and Oldham among the Top 100 Songwriters of all time. The piano-playing Oldham, who has performed with rocker Neil Young, is a member of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as a side performer.
Ed McNees, longtime friend to Penn, says a scant few tickets remain for the concert. The tickets are $30, reserved. McNees can be reached by calling (205) 344-1822. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the concert begins at 7 p.m.
