Patriotic music celebrating America and honoring those who are serving or have served in the military will be featured in the 2025 Wingo Pops concert to be presented by the Starkville-MSU Symphony Orchestra and the Community Chorus at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in the Bettersworth Auditorium of Lee Hall on the Mississippi State University campus.
The program entitled “Home of the Brave” will feature patriotic musical favorites such as “Battle Hymn of the Republic,” “Rocky Mountain Majesty,” and “From Sea to Shining Sea,” along with the Emmy Award winning score from the “Band of Brothers” series and “Hymn to the Fallen” from the movie “Saving Private Ryan” and more iconic musical classics.
“Music has a way of bringing us together and reminding us of the majesty of our country,” said Rex Buffington, president of the Starkville-MSU Symphony Association. “This music also reminds us of our debt of gratitude to the men and women who have served and are serving our nation in the military – those who have sacrificed much to keep America strong and free.”
Daniel Stevens, who is head of the Mississippi State Music Department and serves as artistic director of the symphony, has planned the program and will conduct the 64-piece orchestra. The 28-member Community Chorus, directed by Peter Infanger, will join the symphony on many of the pieces. The concert will be narrated by Walton Jones, rector at the Starkville Episcopal Church of the Resurrection, and will also feature reflections on service from Army Veterans Charles C. (Chuck) Ware and Dr. George Trawick.
“This Wingo Pops performance which will cap a wonderful season of music in Starkville promises to be one to remember,” Buffington said. “We hope people will come for a magnificent evening of entertainment and to join in a heartfelt celebration of all that makes our country great.”
The annual Wingo Pops Concert sponsored by Turner and Gloria Wingo is the final performance of the 56th Starkville-MSU Symphony season.
Tickets are available at starkvillesymphony.org and may be purchased at the door. Military members in uniform will be admitted free.
