A groundbreaking energy efficient program for homeowners is making life better for those eligible in the 4-County Electric Power Association service area.
The Extreme Energy Makeover (EEM), a program offered through the Tennessee Valley Authority’s energyright solutions and 4-County Electric Power Association, is unlocking the energy-saving potential in several area homes.
Those who qualify for the program may be eligible for energy efficient upgrades to their homes. The best part for the individual is that the upgrades are free.
The program is designed to help eligible homeowners living within 4-County’s service area to increase the energy efficiency, comfort and durability of their homes. EEM starts with a home energy audit to identify opportunities for improving efficiency. If you meet the eligibility requirements, then a participating contractor will install a variety of energy-saving upgrades in your home that will reduce your energy use. Qualifications to participate in the program include: applicant must be the homeowner, the home must be 20 or more years old, the home must use electricity as the primary heat source and water heating must be electric, and the home must be a traditional-built home (not a mobile home). There are also some household income stipulations.
Two Lowndes County families are among the first to take advantage of the program. Emma Jennings received new duct work and an energy efficient heat pump for her home. The upgrades, she explained, will substantially improve her quality of life. “It’s going to be wonderful. This will really help me with my electric bills. I’m on a fixed income,” Jennings said. “I can come into a cool house. I’ve been praying about it. I really appreciate it,” she added.
Sonia and George Hickman received some new insulation and an energy efficient heat pump, and leaks around their doors, windows and other areas in their home were sealed. “Thank God there’s a program. They’ve done a good job. This program is a beautiful thing,” George Hickman said. “I need it.” Sonia Hickman agreed. “It means a lot to me,” she said of the energy efficient upgrades. “The house wasn’t airtight. I really appreciate this.”
