Local theater groups from the Golden Triangle area recently participated in the Mississippi Theatre Association Festival, joining organizations from across the state for performances, workshops and opportunities to learn from theater professionals. The festival brings together high school students, community theaters and professional artists for adjudicated performances and educational sessions.

Starkville Community Theatre presented “The Revolutionists” and received multiple awards, including the Warren McDaniel Award for Best Production, which recognizes overall theatrical achievement. Other honors for the production included:

■ Outstanding Achievement in Acting: Grace Brown and Sara Wade;
■ Outstanding Performance in a Lead Role: Jessica Jolly and Victoria Greene;
■ Outstanding Ensemble;
■ Outstanding Scenic Design;
■ Outstanding Technical Achievement; and
■ Outstanding Direction: Louie P. Gallo

“The festival was a wonderful opportunity for our company to share our work, learn from other theater groups and celebrate the dedication of our cast and crew,” said Louie P. Gallo, director of “The Revolutionists.” The company’s performance also qualified it to advance to the Southeastern Theatre Conference Festival in March in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

Golden Triangle Theatre, based in Columbus, made its first appearance at the festival, bringing 26 students to participate in the Community Theatre Division. The group performed “When the Sky Meets the Sea” and earned recognition in several categories:

■ Outstanding Performance in a Supporting Role: Noah Meggs;
■ Outstanding Achievement in Acting: Taylor Long and Will Borer; and
■ Outstanding Costume Design: Allison Jones

“These awards are a testament to the incredible commitment of our students, artists, and volunteers,” said GTT’s Executive Director, Garrett Torbert. “For our very first year at MTA, we are thrilled with what this group accomplished. Beyond the awards, the experience of learning, growing, and connecting with the larger Mississippi theatre community has been invaluable.”

Both organizations provide year-round opportunities for local residents to participate in theater, from acting and directing to set design, costumes and technical support. The festival experiences not only highlight the talent of the performers but also emphasize the importance of arts education and community involvement in the region.
