Atmos Energy, Extra Table ‘fuel’ MLK Day effort
JACKSON — Atmos Energy and the Mississippi nonprofit Extra Table teamed up in honor of Martin Luther King Day to fight hunger in the state. Thousands of “healthy snack packs” will be delivered to Extra Table’s partner food pantries and soup kitchens.
Through a grant from Atmos Energy, Extra Table purchased healthy snack packs so that when kids are out of school during holidays, long weekends or spring break, they still have a nutritious breakfast to start the day. Also, thanks to COVID, some schools are virtual and Extra Table wanted kids to have something to eat while at home. The snack pack has two grains and one fruit as far as nutritional value. It has a Cheerios-type cereal, apple juice and honey graham crackers.
Atmos Energy Corporation has partnered with Extra Table on several projects related to the company’s “Fueling Safe and Thriving Communities” initiative. The company has donated approximately $55,000 to Extra Table over the past two years.
The mission of Extra Table is to fundraise in order to purchase good, healthy food at below wholesale prices and deliver it for free to food pantries and soup kitchens monthly. Extra Table currently has 55 food pantry partners across Mississippi and many other pantries that it shares food with. Partners in the Golden Triangle include Bully’s Closet & Pantry at Mississippi State University, in Starkville and CCS Food Pantry, in West Point.
Website honors Columbus’ Old Hickory Steakhouse
The Food Section, an online site for food journalism in the South, recently selected Old Hickory Steakhouse in Columbus as one of the five best old-school steakhouses in the South.
Hanna Raskin notes in the article that she likes the “ribeye, but regardless of which cut you order, the price includes a slice of Texas toast, a salad, and a baked potato. (Shredded cheese costs extra.) There’s no charge for a frosted mug with your canned beer.
“Old Hickory’s legendary charcoal grill — the source of every order, since there’s nothing but steak on the menu — spills smoke onto cars parked in front of the building and provides the restaurant’s soundtrack: Even at three rooms’ remove, you can hear it sizzle.”
Old Hickory is at 1301 Highway 45 North and is open from 4-9 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday.
Other old-school steakhouses included in the list are The Beefmaster Inn, in Wilson, North Carolina; Bones, in Atlanta; Charlie’s Steak House, in New Orleans; and Beef ‘N Bottle, in Charlotte, North Carolina.
