Golden Triangle Planning and Development District computer analyst Tim Heard, a Democrat, has qualified to run for District 3 supervisor against incumbent Republican John Holliman.
Heard, who has worked for the GTPDD in some capacity since 1994, ran unsuccessfully for circuit clerk as an independent in 2015. He said he has considered running for District 3 supervisor “for a while” and believes he would be an asset to the county in that position.
“It’s an opportunity to serve District 3,” he said. “And to put some fresh eyes on the county government.”
Heard sits on several boards, including the Mississippi University for Women Employees Federal Credit Union Board of Directors and the East Mississippi Community College Development Foundation Board of Directors. He said his experience looking at budgets and managing board priorities would serve him well as a district supervisor.
“And I just like serving people,” he added.
Heard said his priority as supervisor would be supporting policies that benefited both his district and county residents as a whole.
“I want to make sure citizens in District 3 are looked after,” he said. “And I’d bring development into the district, which will make District 3 look good, which, of course, makes the county look good.”
Holliman, who is serving his third term and could not be reached for comment by press time, has never run unopposed for District 3 supervisor. In 2011, he ran his first race against independent Mike Smith. In 2015, he ran against Republican Patrick “P.J.” Hughes.
As of now, no other Republican or Democrat has qualified in the District 3 race, meaning Holliman and Heard would face each other in the November general election. The deadline to qualify is March 1.
