WESSON — Each season, Christmas morning approaches and many youngsters have the same enthusiasm when they rip through their presents.
The same could be said for the East Mississippi Community College football team.
While the championships are mounting, the Lions celebrate each title like it is the only one they have ever had.

CLINTON — Starkville High School senior quarterback Brady Davis and Clinton High School sophomore quarterback Cam Akers staged one heck of a battle Friday night.
In the end, Davis had the good fortune of having Raphael Leonard, A.J. Brown, and Matt Fuller in his huddle.

SCOOBA — While the East Mississippi Community College football team earned the desired result on the field Saturday, its latest victory didn’t leave the impression the Lions wanted.
No. 2 EMCC defeated then-No. 5 Mississippi Gulf Coast C.C. 42-21 in the opening round of the Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges state playoffs Saturday in Scooba.
Local trio will lead new-look EMCC men’s team
SCOOBA — With players in the program for a maximum of two playing seasons, East Mississippi Community College men’s basketball coach Mark White is used to working with a new group each season.
However, even the Lions are taking things to an extreme this year.
White’s 2014-15 squad has one returning player. However, White is still excited about his eighth season in Scooba. Talent abounds on a 16-player roster that features 12 freshmen.
Patterson set to get back to basketball at EMCC
SCOOBA — For Kiki Patterson, the basketball journey has been a long one.
After a standout career at Columbus High School, Patterson signed with Mississippi State. After a brief stint with MSU’s women’s basketball program, Patterson left the team. Now she is at East Mississippi Community College.
Ole Miss will try to rebound from loss, injury
While Saturday was a tough night for the Ole Miss football program, the Rebels returned to work Monday determined to make the most of their final three games.
A chance to win the Southeastern Conference Western Division championship and an opportunity to beat a team that could be ranked No. 1 in the nation remain. But a 35-31 loss to then-No. 4 Auburn at home Saturday night effectively took Ole Miss out of the discussion for the national championship.
At 11 a.m. Saturday, No. 12 Ole Miss will play host to Presbyterian at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium in its final non-conference game.
Turnovers spark Starkville’s comeback
STARKVILLE — Starkville High School junior defensive lineman Lorenzo Dantzler gathered his teammates and delivered a simple message.
“One turnover,” Dantzler said. “I thought one turnover, one stop, one big play. I felt like that would turn this whole thing around.”
Sophomore Abdural Lee heard the message and took it to heart.

The second-ranked East Mississippi Community College football team hadn’t faced any this season. However, when the Lions found themselves in a struggle, it took the heart of a Lion to bail the team out.

STARKVILLE — Starkville High School junior wide receiver A.J. Brown stood in the end zone of Yellow Jacket Stadium and tried to catch his breath and collect his thoughts.
Brown has spent a majority of the season for the top-ranked Yellow Jackets in the end zone making spectacular catches and scoring a lot of points.

STARKVILLE — The Starkville Academy football team reached its breaking point Friday night.
After losing back-to-back games to archrival Heritage Academy, a senior-dominated Starkville Academy was determined not to allow the streak to reach three.
The Volunteers scored on the first possession and cruised from there to a 31-0 victory in a Mississippi Association of Independent Schools Class AAA, District 1, Division II game at J.E. Logan Field.

SCOOBA — East Mississippi Community College played nine regular-season football game this season. The top-ranked Lions won all of them.
Dear, Murrah will try to end Starkville’s shutout streak
STARKVILLE — Murrah High School quarterback Malik Dear will try to go where no other Starkville High opponent has gone the past four weeks — into the end zone.
The most prolific offensive player in Mississippi High School Activities Association Class 6A, Region 2 play will have his hands full at 7 tonight when Murrah (6-3, 1-3 region) takes on top-ranked Starkville (8-0, 4-0). The Yellow Jackets have posted four-straight shutouts and hasn’t allowed a point in the last 16 quarters.
Starkville volleyball sweeps Clinton
STARKVILLE — April Reese was more than happy to provide the exclamation point.
Clinging to a 13-12 lead in the second set, the Starkville High School volleyball team was locked in a long rally with Clinton on Tuesday in its Mississippi High School Activities Association Class III first-round playoff match.
No. 1 EMCC four wins from another title
SCOOBA — The stakes remain high for the No. 1 East Mississippi Community College football team even though its postseason destination is set.
EMCC is again in the running for a National Junior College Athletic Association national championship. Four more victories will give EMCC an unprecedented third national championship in four seasons.
