MSU slips to No. 4 in College Football Playoff rankings
STARKVILLE — Moments after the Mississippi State football team suffered its first loss of the season at Alabama, tailback Josh Robinson was asked if the Bulldogs still belonged in the top four of the College Football Playoff Committee’s weekly rankings.
“Definitely we do,” Robinson said. “We slipped up today, but we should still be in the top four.”
Robinson was right.

Mississippi State men’s basketball coach Rick Ray loved the first half of his team’s game against Mississippi Valley State on Monday night. Ray watched his Bulldogs shoot 69 percent from the field and score 58 points — the most in his three-year tenure at the school. But Ray didn’t like the second half in which MSU committed 19 of a season-high 26 turnovers.

West Point goes on road to beat Germantown
GLUCKSTADT — Facing a fourth down-and-long late in Friday night’s Mississippi High School Activities Association Class 5A North State playoff opener at Germantown, West Point High School football coach Chris Chambless had a decision to make.
With his Green Wave leading by seven points with nine minutes remaining, Chambless could punt from Germantown’s 31-yard line and pin the Mavericks deep in their territory or he could go for it in an attempt to score the game-clinching touchdown.
In making his decision, Chambless turned his team’s chances over to senior quarterback Dason Thomas and wide receiver Steffon Moore.
MSU faces biggest stakes in game at Alabama
STARKVILLE — The stakes have increased each week in the Mississippi State football team’s 9-0 start to the season.
It started with a 34-29 win at then-No. 8 LSU on Sept. 20, and continued through a two-game home stretch that included victories against then-No. 6 Texas A&M and then-No. 2 Auburn. Along the way, the Bulldogs have stretched their winning streak to 12 games, climbed to the top of the Southeastern Conference’s Western Division, and ascended to No. 1 in the two major national polls.
