SEC teams announce players who will attend Media Days
STARKVILLE — The Mississippi State football team will send three seniors to Southeastern Conference Media Days in Hoover, Alabama, next week.
Linebacker Richie Brown, defensive lineman A.J. Jefferson, and wide receiver Fred Ross will represent MSU on Tuesday when they speak to media members at the Hyatt Regency Birmingham-The Wynfrey Hotel.

STARKVILLE — Mississippi State baseball right-hander Paul Young signed a free-agent contract with the Kansas City Royals on Wednesday, MSU announced.
MSU men’s basketball announces 12-game non-conference slate
STARKVILLE — Ben Howland’s second season leading the Mississippi State men’s basketball team features a non-conference schedule that includes eight home games in Starkville.
The non-conference schedule, which was released Tuesday also features three games in the Charleston Classic and another game in Jackson.
MSU adds late signees to football program
STARKVILLE — The Mississippi State football team announced Tuesday that late signees Osirus Mitchell and Reginald Todd have enrolled at the school.
Both wide receivers signed this summer.
Defensive back Cameron Dantzler, of Hammond, Louisiana, will enroll today, according to a team spokesperson.
Mitchell and Todd join 14 others who enrolled during the June semester.
Starkville High coach Carter back home after surgery
STARKVILLE — After spending three days in the hospital, Starkville High School boys basketball coach Greg Carter is back home.
Carter had a heart attack early Saturday morning and had surgery at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Columbus later in the day to clear a complete blockage of his right coronary artery. He returned home Monday afternoon.
MSU will play Southern Miss in men’s basketball
For the first time in 15 years, the Mississippi State men’s basketball team will play Southern Mississippi.
MSU and Southern Miss have struck a four-game deal, the Hattiesburg American reported Saturday. A MSU spokesperson said nothing is finalized, but an official announcement is expected Tuesday.

Leibovitz will work to raise profile of SEC men’s basketball
Dan Leibovitz wants people to associate Southeastern Conference men’s basketball with success.
Leibovitz decided to begin his work last week during the NBA draft. When Craig Pinkerton, the SEC Director of Communications for men’s basketball, tweeted the league had more first-round picks (five) than any other conference, Leibovitz shared that fact.
“I sent it directly to a couple members of national media just to kind of create a little bit of buzz,” Leibovitz said Monday on the SEC’s summer teleconference. “Their reaction was a little bit jaded, a little bit sarcastic. I’m wondering why that is.”
Lessons learned helped Coggin earn promotion
STARKVILLE — Will Coggin didn’t want to get ahead of himself.
But when Coggin heard Nick Mingione was named the new head baseball coach at Kentucky, he thought Mingione’s good fortune could help him. Mingione served as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for the Mississippi State baseball team. As a volunteer assistant and coordinator of camps, Coggin thought coach John Cohen might promote him.

Henderson expected to be named MSU’s new pitching coach
STARKVILLE — Gary Henderson is close to becoming the new Mississippi State baseball pitching coach, a source said Thursday.
The deal is expected to be finalized today.
The source also said volunteer assistant Will Coggin will be promoted to a full-time assistant and gain the title of recruiting coordinator.
Henderson, who stepped down after eight seasons as the Kentucky coach, will fill a void left by Wes Johnson. Johnson, who spent one season at MSU, was announced as Arkansas’ new pitching coach Wednesday.
