A Lowndes County resident has filed a federal lawsuit against Cable ONE, Inc.
Doris Smith is seeking damages from the cable company after an injury sustained, she claims, following the installation of cable services at her home on Jan. 10, 2013, according to documents filed with the Lowndes County Circuit Court.
Smith said an installation technician employed by Cable ONE went to her house, disconnected the DIRECTV receivers previously attached to Smith’s televisions and left them on the floor without telling Smith they were there. The next day Smith, who was 85 at the time, tripped over the boxes and fell, hitting her eye on an end table next to her couch.
The fall broke Smith’s nose and caused a total retinal detachment, according to the documents. She is now blind in one eye.
She and her Columbus-based attorney, William Starks, argue Cable ONE is responsible for her injuries because its employees created the trip hazard.
The documents did not list a monetary amount Smith is asking for, but said she is seeking compensation for damages including for physical, mental and emotional suffering as well as medical-related expenses and loss of income or earning capacity.
Cable ONE did not return a call to The Dispatch as of press time.
