A suspect who authorities say shot at police officers was hospitalized following a 10-hour standoff with law enforcement in Clay County.
Johnny Dismuke, 43, is in stable condition at North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo with injuries sustained in an exchange of gunfire between him and the officers, Clay County Sheriff Eddie Scott said.
Scott said the standoff began at about 4 p.m. Thursday when his deputies and officers from West Point Police Department arrived at a residence on Northwood Forest Road in West Point to serve a mental commitment order to Dismuke.
“When they approached the door, he fired through the door,” Scott said.
Scott said officers from Mississippi Highway Patrol and a Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics SWAT team were called in to assist during the exchange of gunfire. No officers were injured.
The standoff ended at about 2 a.m. Friday when officers took the suspect into custody, Scott said.
He added Dismuke has multiple charges “coming down the pipe,” including aggravated assault on law enforcement officers.
Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is handling the investigation, Scott said.
