FULTON — A Mississippi sheriff says two men are dead and a 10-year-old girl has been rescued after a standoff that lasted more than 30 hours.
Itawamba County Sheriff Chris Dickinson told news outlets the girl was safe and the man holding her is dead, as is her father.
Dickinson said the Mississippi State Patrol SWAT team entered the home northeast of Tupelo around 9 p.m. Sunday.
Dickinson said the girl called 911 Saturday afternoon and warned dispatchers not to allow deputies to come to the front door because Nathan Shepard was waiting for them. Shepard was found dead when the SWAT team entered the home.
The sheriff did not say how Shepard or the girl’s father died.
The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation says a weapon was found at the scene.
