Three pets were killed in a camper fire Thursday afternoon at Dewayne Hayes Campground.
District 2 volunteer firefighters responded just before 1 p.m. to site 91 of Dewayne Hayes Campground on Barton Ferry Road to find the camper fully involved in the fire, Interim Fire Services Coordinator Jim Robbins told The Dispatch.
The camper was a “total loss,” Robbins said. The two people living in the camper were not home at the time of the fire, though three of their pets were killed.
Robbins said it took about 20 minutes to contain the blaze, and it did not spread to neighboring campsites. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
