A slow start proved to be a hurdle that the Mississippi University for Women women’s basketball team could not overcome Thursday night in an 82-53 road loss to Crowley’s Ridge College in Paragould, Arkansas.
The Owls fell to 0-3 overall, while the Pioneers improved to 4-3.
The W found itself in a hole early, trailing 23-6 after the first quarter, thanks in large part to a lackluster 2-for-18 shooting performance to open the game. MUW trailed 47-23 at intermission.
In the third period, The W cut into the Pioneers’ cushion, outscoring the hosts 19-13 and trailing by 18 points (60-42) going into the final period.
Junior forward MG Chamberlain led the Owls with 15 points. Chamberlain made good on 7 of 18 field goal tries in her 33 minutes on the floor. She also had 4 rebounds and a blocked shot.
Senior Rokila Wallace, a Columbus native, had a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds, shooting 10 of 13 from the free throw line. She also finished with 5 assists and 3 steals, both team-high totals for The W.
Maddie Guerin, making her first start for the Owls, had 9 points and 7 rebounds, while Christiana Harris totaled 8 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists. Hannah Duran was held scoreless but contributed 6 rebounds and 4 blocks.
CRC’s reserves outscored The W’s bench 32-7.
The W will next play in the Millsaps Tournament this weekend in Jackson. The Owls will face Birmingham-Southern at 11 a.m. Saturday and Millsaps, ranked No. 25 in NCAA Division III, at 1 p.m. Sunday.
