Mississippi State women’s basketball coach Sam Purcell landed his third player from the transfer portal on Sunday evening, as Asianae Johnson announced her commitment to the Bulldogs. Johnson, a graduate transfer from St. Bonaventure, gives the Bulldogs some more depth at guard and brings both experience and scoring to Starkville.

Johnson averaged 18.1 points during her senior campaign for the Bonnies, earning All-Atlantic 10 Conference honors for the second year in a row and garnering some serious interest from Power 5 programs for her final year of eligibility. In the end, she chose the Bulldogs, and joins a rapidly growing squad that is well on track to have much more than seven active players per game next season.
With the departure of Myah Taylor and Ashley Jones, as well as the decommitment of Alyza Winston, the Bulldogs were in need of guards. They now have another experienced scorer in the backcourt, and have added three players rather quickly over the past week including Kourtney Weber from Florida State and Ramani Parker from Louisville.
The addition of Johnson moves the Bulldogs closer to a full roster than they have been for some time. They currently have 12 scholarship spots taken for the 2022-23 season, leaving three offers available for high school or transfer prospects.
At the rate they’ve been moving on the recruiting front, it seems likely that Purcell and his staff aren’t done adding talent, and there are still plenty of talented players in the transfer portal.
