Following Zach Arnett’s dismissal Monday morning as Mississippi State head football coach, Greg Knox, a senior offensive analyst, was named interim head coach for the remainder of the 2023 season.
Knox, 60, has been in college football coaching for 34 years, including a nine-year stint with the Bulldogs under Dan Mullen from 2009 through 2017. He coached MSU’s running backs for all nine of those seasons and was also the special teams coordinator for the last four. After Mullen accepted the head job at Florida, Knox followed him to Gainesville, but stayed behind as interim head coach for the Bulldogs’ bowl game that year, a 31-27 victory over Louisville.
“As the interim head coach, I talked to the staff this morning,” Knox said Monday. “We’re going to go out there and be who we are, and I want the coaches to understand that.”
Prior to his first tenure with MSU, Knox spent seven seasons coaching wide receivers at Ole Miss, then 10 more in the same role at Auburn. He stayed on as Mullen’s running backs coach for four years at Florida, then served as the Gators’ interim head coach after Mullen was fired with one game left in the 2021 regular season. Knox coached Florida to a win over rival Florida State to get the Gators to bowl eligibility, but they then fell to UCF in the Gasparilla Bowl.
Last season, Knox was the running backs coach at Buffalo before Arnett lured him back to Starkville.
“One thing in my life that I’ve been privileged to do is make an impact on young men,” Knox said. “That’s what we’re going to do here in the next 10 days.”
