Following a 21-point home loss to Kentucky last week, Mississippi State is back on the road Saturday as the Bulldogs travel to Texas A&M for a 6:30 p.m. kickoff on ESPN2.
The Aggies have come close to knocking off three ranked foes, but came up short in one-score losses to Alabama, Tennessee and Ole Miss. They also have three double-digit wins in Southeastern Conference play over Auburn, Arkansas and South Carolina. Last week against the Rebels, Texas A&M overcame a 14-point deficit to take a late lead before Ole Miss scored the eventual game-winning touchdown with less than two minutes remaining.
What: Mississippi State at Texas A&M
When: 6:30 p.m. Saturday
Where: Kyle Field, College Station, Texas
TV: ESPN2
Betting line: Texas A&M by 18.5
Weather: Low clouds with a high of 58 degrees and winds out of the north-northeast at 9 miles per hour, per AccuWeather
Records/rankings: MSU is 4-5 and 1-5 in SEC play. The Aggies are 5-4 and 3-3 in conference action. Neither team is ranked in any of the polls, though Texas A&M is receiving one vote in the AP Top 25.
Series history: Mississippi State leads 9-7. The teams have met every year since the Aggies joined the SEC in 2011, and the Bulldogs have won the last two head-to-head matchups.
Mississippi State update: The Bulldogs’ offense was shut down on Homecoming last Saturday by Kentucky, as MSU’s only points came on a field goal after a 20-play, 88-yard drive that took up nearly 12 and a half minutes. Mike Wright made his third consecutive start at quarterback, and true freshman Chris Parson saw some action in mop-up duty as he made his Bulldogs debut.
Head coach Zach Arnett hinted at Monday’s press conference that starter Will Rogers, who injured his left shoulder against Western Michigan on Oct. 7, could return this week. Without him, the Bulldogs have scored a total of just 23 points in their last three games and rank last in the SEC for the season in points per game.
Texas A&M update: The Aggies lost starting quarterback Conner Weigman to a season-ending foot injury in late September against Auburn, so LSU transfer Max Johnson has been behind center since then. Johnson was very good last week at Ole Miss, completing 31 of 42 passes for 305 yards with a touchdown and an interception.
Le’Veon Moss and Amari Daniels share the load at running back, while Ainias Smith and Evan Stewart are Texas A&M’s leading receivers. Defensively, Edgerrin Cooper has racked up 16 tackles for loss and seven sacks, while Josh DeBerry has intercepted two passes and broken up seven more.
Texas A&M players to watch: QB Max Johnson, RB Amari Daniels, WR Ainias Smith, LB Edgerrin Cooper, CB Josh DeBerry.
Prediction: If Rogers does indeed return, MSU’s offense could find some new life, but the Aggies are just more talented on both sides of the ball. Texas A&M 24, Mississippi State 13.
