Following a blowout loss to LSU in the Southeastern Conference opener, Mississippi State hits the road for the first time this season, journeying east to face South Carolina on Saturday night at 6:30 p.m. Central Time on SEC Network.
The two teams have not played each other since 2016, when the Bulldogs defeated the Gamecocks 27-14 in Starkville. The last time they met in Columbia was a 34-16 South Carolina victory in 2013, and MSU has not won at Williams-Brice Stadium since 1998.
This year, the Gamecocks opened with a loss to then-No. 21 North Carolina in a neutral site game, then defeated Furman, a team ranked in the Football Championship Subdivision top 10, in their home opener. Last weekend, South Carolina held a two-score lead on the road over No. 1 Georgia at halftime but was shut out in the second half and lost 24-14.
Here is what to know and watch for as the Bulldogs look for their first win in SEC play.
What: Mississippi State at South Carolina
When: 6:30 p.m. Saturday
Where: Williams-Brice Stadium, Columbia, S.C.
TV: SEC Network
Betting line: South Carolina by 6.5
Weather: Cloudy skies with a couple of showers and a high of 75 degrees. Winds out of the north-northeast at 10 miles per hour, per AccuWeather
Records/rankings: MSU is 2-1 and 0-1 in SEC play. The Gamecocks are 1-2 overall and also 0-1 in conference action. Neither team is ranked or receiving votes in the AP Top 25 or the AFCA Coaches Poll.
Series history: South Carolina leads 9-7. The Bulldogs won the most recent meeting in 2016, but the Gamecocks had won six straight over MSU before that.
Mississippi State update: The Bulldogs were methodically dominated by LSU last Saturday and struggled mightily on both sides of the ball. On offense, MSU had just five total yards until putting together a touchdown drive late in the second quarter. On defense, the Bulldogs allowed Jayden Daniels to complete 30 of 34 passes for 361 yards, with 239 of those yards going to star wide receiver Malik Nabers.
Quarterback Will Rogers had arguably his worst game in an MSU uniform, completing just 11 of his 28 passes for 103 yards.
South Carolina update: The Gamecocks were in position for the biggest upset of the college football season, but Georgia found its footing after halftime and clamped down on South Carolina’s offense. Quarterback Spencer Rattler was erratic, finishing 22-of-42 passing for 256 yards, and he threw interceptions on the Gamecocks’ last two drives. Still, Rattler is among college football’s most prolific passers, and South Carolina’s offense starts and ends with him.
Linebacker Stone Blanton, who was once committed to Mississippi State to play baseball, is among the Gamecocks’ leaders on defense with 16 tackles and a sack through three games.
South Carolina players to watch: QB Spencer Rattler, WR Xavier Legette, LB Debo Williams, DT T.J. Sanders.
Prediction: This is going to be a battle of veteran quarterbacks, and Rattler has inspired more confidence of late than Rogers. There are ways to attack this Gamecocks defense, but the Bulldogs come up a bit short in this one. South Carolina 24, Mississippi State 20.
