West Point, which has won the last three state championships in Class 5A, was ranked as the top team in its class and the No. 2 team overall in Mississippi when the Associated Press released its weekly high school football poll Tuesday.
Eleven Mississippi media outlets, including The Commercial Dispatch and WCBI, were polled on the top five teams in each class and the top 10 overall.
The Green Wave got all 11 first-place votes in Class 5A, which earned them 110 points. Lafayette was second with 90, and West Jones was third with 71.
In the overall poll, first-place Brandon and West Point each earned four first-place votes. Brandon finished with 100 points, West Point had 91, and third-place Madison Central had the remaining three first-place votes and 88 points.
Heritage Academy got four first-place votes and finished second among private schools with 94 points. Madison-Ridgeland Academy was first with the other seven first-place votes.
Noxubee County finished fourth in the Class 3-A poll, earning one first-place vote and 69 total points in the close final standings. First-place Seminary had just 80 points, and second-place Columbia had 75.
West Lowndes was the third-highest team receiving votes outside of the top five in Class 1A, earning 12 points.
