The West Point High School football team held its positions as the No. 4 team in the state and the top team in Class 5A in this week’s AP Mississippi Prep Football Poll released Tuesday.
The Green Wave wrapped up the 5A-1 title with a 41-10 rout of Saltillo as the top four teams in the Top 10 remained the same: No. 1 Greenville Christian, No. 2 Ocean Springs and No. 3 Madison Central.
The Yellow Jackets moved up from No. 8 after their 35-7 win over Germantown. Starkville also remained at No. 3 in Class 6A, behind Ocean Springs and Madison Central, a team the Jackets defeated 35-28 on Sept. 24.
Among private schools, Heritage Academy switched places with Leake Academy, moving up to No. 3 and passing the only team to defeat them this year despite being idle last week.
The only other local team to receive votes was West Lowndes, which picked up 13 points in the Class 1A poll, placing the Panthers eighth.
Greenville Christian received all 10 first-place votes in the Top 10, and Ocean Springs received all 10 second-place votes in the poll. In the class polls, Ocean Springs in 6A, Scott Central in 2A, Simmons in 1A and Greenville Christian among private schools were unanimous No. 1 picks.
