Sophomore Tyrese Johnson belted a grand slam to center field with two outs in the top of the seventh inning to lift the West Point High School baseball team to a 12-9 win over Caledonia on Saturday in Caledonia.
The Green Wave loaded the bases on a hit batter and two walks with two strikeouts mixed in before Johnson’s blast.
Jaylen Davis drove in three runs for West Point on a sacrifice fly in the second, an RBI double in the fourth and an RBI single in the fifth on which a second run scored on the throw. Ben Harrell went 2 for 4 with two RBIs, and Elijah Young went 2 for 5 and scored a run for the Green Wave. Senior Fred McMillian pitched two hitless innings or relief to earn the win.
Will Donald and Brandon Glenn each went 2 for 3 with two RBIs for the Cavaliers, while Parker Harris also drove in two runs. Kellen Coleman went 2 for 4 and scored twice.
Oak Hill 10, East Webster 0: John Ross Craven tossed a five-inning two-hitter, striking out four and walking none, as the Raiders cruised.
Garrett Edwards went 2 for 3 with two doubles, an RBI and two runs scored, while Craven, Cameron Dill and Jacob Mobley also doubled as Oak Hill outhit East Webster 9-2.
Six players drove in a run apiece for the Raiders, who benefited from four East Webster errors.
Starkville 5, Tupelo 4: Leadoff batter Ethan Pulliam went 2 for 4 with two RBIs and a run scored as the Yellow Jackets won a region game in Tupelo.
Nursing a one-run lead in the top of the fourth, Starkville got two-out RBI singles from Chipper Hornburger and Brennan Wright to take a 5-2 lead.
The Jackets had taken a 3-1 lead in the second on a two-run double by Pulliam and an infield error.
The Golden Wave threatened in the top of the seventh, loading the bases with one out on a dropped third strike, an error and a walk. But Otto Hyche struck out Patrick Helms for the second out, and Kylan Washington lined out to Starkville first baseman Karsten Upchurch to end the game.
Softball
New Hope 6, Senatobia 2: Kensley Woolbright blasted a three-run home run to center field during a four-run second inning that propelled the Trojans in Batesville.
Zoe Goodman lashed a two-run single to right to put New Hope ahead during the top of the first. Lexi McBrayer went 3 for 3 and scored twice for the Trojans; Woolbright’s home run and Goodman’s RBI single were New Hope’s only other hits.
Adi Dueitt struck out six in four innings to earn the win for New Hope.
New Hope 5, Bruce 3: Taylor Brownlee, Lexi McBrayer and Kensley Woolbright each doubled and scored a run for the Trojans, who won while getting only five hits in a three-inning game in Batesville.
Woolbright, Duett and Emma O’Bryant drove in New Hope’s runs. Woolbright was the winning pitcher, pitching all three innings.
Archery
SHS, SA mark senior night
Hayden Johnson posted the top male score of the day with a 286, Cassin Grant led female shooters with a 283, and the Starkville High School archery team celebrated senior night with a 3,204-3,062 win over host Starkville Academy.
Brandon Rowell led male shooters for the Volunteers with a score of 279, while Holland Nicholas was the top female for the Vols with a 262.
Starkville High School seniors are Jonathan Forrester, Cassan Gant, Easton Gillis, Emma King, Aidan Matthews, Sarah Roberson, Ashton Smith and Katie Rose Westbrook. Starkville Academy’s senior is Colton Smith.
FRIDAY
Baseball
Starkville 16, Tupelo 1: Koby Livingston doubled, tripled, scored twice and drove in five runs as the Yellow Jackets rolled at home.
Ethan Pulliam went 2 for 4 with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored while pitching a five-inning three-hitter with seven strikeouts.
Brennon Wright went 3 for 3 with a double, two RBIs and two runs for Starkville (6-9), which won two of three from Tupelo.
After Tupelo took a 1-0 lead in the first, Starkville scored three runs in the second, six in the third and seven in the fourth to invoke the run rule.
Oak Hill 21, Carroll 8: The Raiders sent 17 batters to the plate in the top of the seventh, scoring 11 runs on seven hits, three walks, three hit batters, an error and two passed balls.
Cameron Dill went 3 for 6 with a double, five RBIs and two runs scored, while Brian Buchanan went 4 for 5 with a walk, a double, an RBI and a run scored for Oak Hill (9-6). Ty Harden, Grant Fretz and Jacob Mobley each had two hits.
The Raiders battered six Carroll pitchers for 17 hits as they posted their eighth consecutive victory.
Corinth 10, Caledonia 1: Corinth’s Jack Taylor no-hit the Cavaliers, striking out six and walking five.
Four Caledonia pitchers combined to allow just three hits, but seven walks and eight errors doomed the Cavaliers. Zack Gorum allowed four unearned runs in the first inning but settled down to throw four consecutive scoreless innings after that, striking out six. In all, nine of the 10 runs Corinth scored were unearned.
The Cavaliers scored in the bottom of the fifth. Nick Wade led off with a walk, took second on a walk to C. Bates, advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on a grounder to first by Gorum.
