Mississippi State women’s basketball will host Miami (Fla.) at 6:15 p.m. on Nov. 29 in the inaugural ACC/SEC Challenge. The game will be televised on SEC Network.
The Hurricanes, as a No. 9 seed in the 2023 NCAA Tournament, advanced all the way to the regional finals before losing to eventual national champion LSU. The Bulldogs will also be coming off an NCAA Tournament appearance as head coach Sam Purcell begins his second season leading the program. MSU won a First Four game as a No. 11 seed over Illinois, then upset Creighton and eventually bowed out in the round of 32 against Notre Dame.
The Bulldogs’ men’s team, in their first-ever ACC/SEC Challenge matchup, will visit Georgia Tech for a 6 p.m. Central Time tip-off on Nov. 28 on ACC Network. MSU lost in the First Four last season to Pittsburgh but has high expectations for the 2023-24 season, with all five starters returning.
Forward Tolu Smith has been named to the preseason all-SEC First Team by both Lindy’s and Field of 68, and to the preseason All-American second team by Blue Ribbon Magazine. Blue Ribbon also had the Bulldogs at No. 20 in its preseason national rankings.
The ACC had contested an annual challenge during the week after Thanksgiving with the Big Ten since 1999 on the men’s side and since 2007 on the women’s side. But because ESPN holds the broadcast rights and the Big Ten no longer has a media rights deal with ESPN, the SEC replaced the Big Ten for the event starting this season.
