After pitching mostly in a setup and long relief role in his first season at Mississippi State, Cam Schuelke is excelling as the primary closer this summer for the Cotuit Kettleers of the prestigious Cape Cod Baseball League.
Schuelke is in his third season with Cotuit, the organization that taught him how to throw from a submarine arm slot in addition to his overhand and sidearm deliveries in 2022.
He picked up his first save this summer on June 25 against the Falmouth Commodores, striking out both batters he faced with the tying run at the plate to preserve a 4-2 victory. On Saturday against the Wareham Gatemen, Schuelke entered the game in the top of the ninth with a 4-2 lead following a leadoff single, and although he walked the first batter he faced, he retired the next three on a flyout, a popout and a strikeout to earn another save.
Schuelke is eligible for this month’s MLB Draft but has one year of college eligibility remaining. He redshirted as a true freshman at Florida Gulf Coast and has also played for Northwood University and the College of Central Florida.
Over in the New England Collegiate Baseball League, outfielder Brett House has cooled off considerably after a strong start for the Keene Swamp Bats. House, who did not see any playing time with the Bulldogs as a freshman, hit three home runs in his first five games for Keene, but has just one hit over his last 10 games.
Nolan Stevens, who showed promise as a two-way player for MSU as a freshman in the spring, has been on a tear at the plate for the NECBL’s Newport Gulls. He is slashing .379/.455/.603 and has hit safely in his last 13 games, with multiple hits in seven of those contests. Stevens hit two doubles on Saturday against the North Shore Navigators, then went 3-for-4 with two walks and two RBI in a 14-0 win Monday over the Upper Valley Nighthawks.
In the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League, based in New York, rising sophomore outfielder Michael O’Brien has performed well for the Amsterdam Mohawks. Through 15 games, O’Brien is batting .292 with a .404 on-base percentage as well as 11 stolen bases.
Catcher Steven Spalitta, also a rising sophomore with the Mohawks, has shown impressive plate discipline with 11 walks and just two strikeouts through 14 games. Despite a .238 batting average, Spalitta is getting on base at a .543 clip.
Gage Haley has made three starts on the mound and two relief appearances for Amsterdam, with a 2-0 record and a 4.80 ERA in 15 innings. His 20 strikeouts are impressive, but his 10 walks are somewhat concerning. His last outing was a three-up, three-down inning on June 25 with two strikeouts against the Boonville Lumberjacks.
