CLINTON — Starkville track and field will be well-represented at the Mississippi High School Activities Association Class 6A state meet on Saturday in Pearl.
Eighteen athletes across the boys and girls teams qualified for states after top-four finishes at last Saturday’s North State meet in Clinton.
“The boys team finished sixth of 16 teams,” Starkville boys coach Tory Reeves said. “All in all, it was a pretty good day. We had 12 guys make the trip to North State, and 11 of the 12 advanced to the state meet.”
The Yellow Jackets won first place in two events, boys triple jump and boys discus. Senior Sterling Scott won North State with a triple jump of 48 feet, 3.5 inches. Scott also finished second in the long jump with an attempt of 22 feet, nine inches.
Senior Anthony Hogan, sidelined from participating in the 400-meter relay due to a hamstring issue, was able to pull through in discus with a throw of 136 feet, nine inches.
In the 3200-meter relay, Starkville set a new school record with a time of 8:21.5, finishing third as a team. The Jackets also placed in the top four in the 800-meter run, the 800-meter relay and had two finishers for triple jump as Jejuan Davis finished third.
On the girls side, the Jackets finished fifth overall, placing in the top four in five events. Emerald Owens had the top individual performance of the day, placing second in long jump with an attempt of 16 feet, six inches.
Starkville also qualified in discus, pole vault, the 800-meter relay and 200-meter dash.
“I was pleased,” Starkville girls coach Tony Minor said. “Every young lady put in a good effort. Once you get to this point, only the strong survive. I was satisfied with the effort they gave. That says a lot about our program here.”
