STARKVILLE — It was a matter of time before Starkville three-star quarterback Trey Petty would make his college commitment official.
On Thursday, he did just that as the 2024 prospect committed on social media to Illinois.
Listed as the No. 55 quarterback in the 2024 class and No. 26 overall player in Mississippi, Petty is going to be joining a very familiar quarterback room in Urbana-Champaign.
This offseason, former Starkville product and Ole Miss quarterback Luke Altmyer announced he would be transferring to play for the Fighting Illini, meaning that in two seasons’ time, the two could be in the same quarterback room, fighting it out for a starting spot.
Petty is coming off a state championship-winning season with Starkville, who went 12-3 en route to taking down Brandon in the Mississippi High School Activities Association Class 6A title game.
He completed 63.3 percent of his passes as a junior, throwing for 2,737 passing yards and 30 passing touchdowns. Petty also ran for 745 yards and 16 rushing touchdowns, averaging 4.5 yards per carry.
In total, he recorded 46 touchdowns for Starkville.
Petty also had offers from Indiana, Georgia State, Georgia Tech, Mississippi State, West Virginia and San Diego State, among others.
