Starkville High School senior Rhett Schimpf covered the 5-kilometer Choctaw Trails course in 16 minutes, 30.6 seconds to claim sixth place at the MHSAA Class 6A Boys Cross-Country Championships on Saturday in Jackson.
Senior Luke Johnson of team champion Oxford won the individual title in 15:54.19.
The Yellow Jackets finished ninth in the team standings. Also placing in the top 50 for Starkville were senior Chris Bell (30th, 17:19.04) and sophomore Giles Jones (44th, 17:34.92).
The top two finishers for the Starkville girls were Addyson Vickers (57th, 22:27.91) and Samantha Layton (62nd, 22:36.88). The Yellow Jackets girls finished 18th.
Ruffin 8th among 4A girls
Sophomore Emma Ruffin of Caledonia High School finished eighth in the Class 4A girls race.
Ruffin covered the 5-kilometer course in 21:23.04, one of only 12 4A runners to break 22 minutes.
Kata Gann of Itawamba Agricultural won the individual championship in 19:54.78, while Corinth placed all five scoring runners among the top 16 to easily claim the team title.
Senior Tyler Merlin led the Caledonia boys, crossing the line in 19:24.78 to finish 44th. Pontotoc’s Cooper Parmer won the individual title in 16:12.93, while Senatobia nosed out Corinth for the team title.
In the Class 5A girls race, New Hope senior Hannah East finished in 23:01.08 to place 18th. For the New Hope boys, senior Brantley Shelton placed 31st in 19:36.40, and sophomore Caiden Strawder covered the course in 21:52.30 to finish 56th.
