While Major League Baseball teams typically have just three or four jerseys to choose from, college baseball teams rarely wear the same uniform twice in a series. Mississippi State has worn seven different jerseys this season, and several others were in circulation until recently.
All uniform rankings are, of course, subjective, and fans tend to have nearly as strong opinions on what the Bulldogs are wearing as they do on how they’re playing. But, with that being said, here is one beat writer’s ranking on every jersey MSU has worn in 2025.
- White pinstripes
As a Cubs fan, I’m a sucker for a pinstriped home uniform with a logo off to the side rather than a wordmark across the front — although these have more of a Yankees feel to them with the two letters on top of each other. Still, they’re a vintage look, with the “M over S” logo with a faint, barely visible white outline and no names on the back. The pinstriped pants make the uniform complete, and combined with the classic maroon hat with the M over S, it’s an all-around iconic home outfit. I wish the Bulldogs would wear these every home Saturday and midweek, but they’ve only worn them three times this year, and only one of those games was at Dudy Noble Field.
- Maroon ‘85s
Easily the best of the throwback-style set designed to look like MSU’s 1985 uniforms, honoring the Bulldogs team with Will Clark and Rafael Palmeiro that won the Southeastern Conference and reached the College World Series. I don’t mind the Western font on the front, although with the oversized S that pokes its way above the rest of the wordmark, it almost looks like the jerseys read “Smississippi Tate.” With “maroon Friday” as a campus-wide tradition, it makes sense to wear maroon for Friday games, especially at home, and these are a fan favorite for a reason.
- Black script with maroon piping
I know a lot of fans don’t want MSU to wear black jerseys at all, and I’m certainly glad the black ‘85s — which had no maroon whatsoever and were often paired with black pants — are no longer in the rotation. But I really don’t mind these as a home Sunday alternate. The maroon script and the Western-style number are still fairly easy to read thanks to the white outline, and the piping is a great touch. I also like that these are paired with the white, maroon-billed hats and helmets for Sunday home games. As a primary uniform, these would not rank very high, but it’s what an alternate home uniform should be. Don’t wear them on the road, though.
- Gray script
This should be the only gray jersey the Bulldogs ever wear. Introduced in 2020, it’s a simple, traditional road look with the State script across the front and the number underneath. The maroon and white triple stripe on the sleeves and pants is also excellent. And unlike the ‘85s, this is a button-up rather than a pullover, which looks a lot more professional in my view.
- Maroon script
Judging by what I’ve seen on the internet, these jerseys are not the most popular among MSU fans, but as a traditionalist and minimalist when it comes to uniforms, I’m glad the Bulldogs kept this in circulation. I like the silver number on the back, but that means this jersey only works when paired with gray pants. It’s a great look for midweek and Sunday road games, but it should never be worn with white pants or at home.
- White ‘85s
I just said I’m a uniform traditionalist and minimalist, but these are too plain even for me. It’s a white jersey with no buttons, no pinstripes and no piping; just the same Western-style wordmark as its maroon counterpart. While the maroon ‘85s at least provide some contrast between the jersey and pants, the white ‘85s do not have enough going on to be worth wearing for anything but an occasional home midweek game.
- Gray pinstripes
I know I established that I’m a big fan of pinstripes, but they really don’t work in any color other than white. The gray pinstriped jersey may not actually be darker than the plain gray with the State script, but the pinstripes and the outline around the “M over S” make it look like more of a charcoal gray, which is just not a pretty shade. With two different maroon jerseys and another gray jersey to wear on the road, MSU does not need this one. I’m glad the Bulldogs have only worn them once this year, but they should be taken out of the rotation.
