Cassin Gant led all scorers with 280 points to pace the Starkville High School archery team to a 3,232-3,085 win over visiting Starkville Academy in its first meet of the season on Tuesday at Partnership Middle School.
The top 12 scores of each team are totaled to come up with the team total. The maximum number of points a competitor can earn for six rounds of shooting is 300.
Right behind Gant’s 280 for Starkville were Elijah Morton and Jenna Holder, each with 279 points, followed by Hayden Johnson (278), Jonathan Forrester (272), Felicity Andol (271), Ethan Hicks (270), Katie Westbook (265), Emma Powney (262), Andrew Phillips (261), Ethan Jackson (258) and Holden Herbet (257).
Jackson Waters paced Starkville Academy with 269 points. Other Volunteers who scored include Colton Smith (265), Jonathan Stancill (264), Tina Trac (263), Justin Crittenden (261), Brandon Rowell (261), Jacob Hemphill (257), Mary Holland Nichols (257), Hayden Smith (251), Andrew Robertson (247), John Lewis Tehnet (246) and Allie Randall (244).
Starkville, coached by Bubba Forrester, will host Tupelo at 5 p.m. Thursday at Partnership Middle School, while Starkville Academy, coached by former Yellow Jackets coach Tate Fisher, will travel to West Point for a meet at 5 p.m. Feb. 21.
Boys basketball
Starkville 72, DeSoto Central 42: Connor Rogers scored 22 points, and Makhi Myles tallied 20 as the Yellow Jackets rolled in their Class 6A tournament opener.
The Yellow Jackets took a 20-10 lead after one quarter and really put away the Jaguars with a 28-9 margin during the third quarter, which pushed the home team’s lead to 61-29.
Starkville will travel to Southaven for a 7 p.m. Saturday game against the Chargers.
Columbus 54, Lake Cormorant 38: The Falcons led the Gators 36-33 after the third quarter before pulling away in the fourth to advance to the second round of the MHSAA 5A tournament.
Columbus will travel to Provine at 7 p.m. Saturday.
Noxubee County 73, Yazoo County 50: The Tigers cruised into the second round of the MHSAA 3A tournament, where they will meet Holly Springs at 7 p.m. Saturday in Macon.
Baseball
Caledonia 7, East Webster 0: Josh Pitts tossed a complete game, striking out 10 without issuing a walk, to lead the Cavaliers.
Pitts allowed just one hit and needed just 85 pitches to polish off the Wolverines.
Caledonia has a busy week ahead, with games Thursday at Sulligent, Friday at Nettleton and Saturday at Belmont.
Softball
Starkville 21, Louisville 9: Kiersten Burnett collected four of the Yellow Jackets’ eight hits in their rout of the Wildcats.
Presley Buckley had three hits as Starkville evened its record at 1-1. Sophomore Olivia Mattison earned the win in the circle for the Yellow Jackets, who next will face Choctaw County, the team they lost to in their opener, at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in Ackerman.
