The West Point High School football team is ranked fourth in the state and first in Class 5A in the AP Mississippi High School Football Poll released Tuesday.
The Green Wave moved up three places following a 38-19 win over Noxubee County last week in Macon after losing their opening two games by forfeit. Starkville is knocking on the door of the Top 10, getting seven points from voters following a 38-7 win over Olive Branch.
The Yellow Jackets also are just outside the Top 5 in Class 6A, getting 14 points from voters. No. 5 South Panola garnered 39 points. The Green Wave took over first place in Class 5A from West Jones, getting five of nine first-place votes.
Picayune is the only newcomer to the Top 10, with the Maroon Tide (3-0) getting 14 points from voters after victories over Poplarville (21-13), Jefferson Davis County (41-33) and Gulfport (35-21).
Noxubee County slipped from No. 2 to No. 3 in Class 3A after losing to West Point, but the Tigers still received two first-place votes and are comfortably ahead of No. 4 Magee, 74-43.
Among private schools, Heritage Academy remained No. 4 after a 42-21 win over South Pontotoc. The Patriots open district play this week against rival Starkville Academy in Columbus.
