Senior Makayla Rieves scored 7 points during the first quarter as the Columbus High School girls basketball team jumped out to a 13-3 lead and cruised to a 44-12 win over New Hope in the MHSAA Class 5A, Region 1 championship game on Friday night in New Hope.
Shania Givens led Columbus with 15 points, while Rieves finished with 13. The Falcons earned a bye in the state tournament and will host the winner of Monday’s game between Callaway and Ridgeland at 7 p.m. Friday.
Jakiya Lewis scored 7 points to lead New Hope, which will be home again Monday night to face Lake Cormorant in the first round of the state tournament.
MHSAA 6A-1
Tupelo 70, Starkville 45: In Tupelo, Jamaica Young scored 13 points, and Zariyah Edwards added 11, but the Yellow Jackets fell in the region final.
The Golden Wave earned the bye in the first round of the MHSAA Tournament and will await the winner of Monday’s game between Hernando and Madison Central.
Starkville will open tournament play Monday night with a home game against Center Hill.
MHSAA 3A-4
Noxubee County 32, Nettleton 30: The Tigers captured the region title on their home court and will host Amanda Elzy, the No. 4 seed out of Region 1, in their state tournament opener at 7 p.m. Monday.
MAIS 4A-1
Oak Hill 42, Marshall 38 (OT): Junior Morgan Dabbs scored 4 of her team-high 14 points during overtime for the Raiders, who outscored the Patriots 8-4 in the extra period in the third-place game on Saturday in Batesville.
Junior Mary Beth Briggs added 11 points for Oak Hill, which led 16-8 after the first quarter but trailed by a basket entering the fourth. Briggs and Dovie Suggs, who scored 9 points on Saturday, were named to the all-tournament team.
North Delta 55, Oak Hill 47: Junior Mary Beth Briggs scored 15 of her 17 points after halftime as the Raiders tried to rally from a 23-11 halftime deficit in the semifinals on Friday Batesville.
Sophomore Harley Vaughn and junior Morgan Dabbs each scored 8 points for Oak Hill.
Senior guard Shelby Boone led the Green Wave with 16 points.
MAIS 2A-1
Columbus Christian 44, West Memphis Christian 33: Ada Farlow scored 14 points, including 8 during the third quarter, as the Rams won the third-place game on Saturday on their home court.
Morgan Whitten scored 10 of her 12 points during the first half for Columbus Christian, which will play the No. 4 team out of District 3.
Delta 44, Columbus Christian 40: Morgan Whitten led the way for the Rams with 17 points in the semifinals on Friday in Steens.
Satavia Watkins scored 8 points, and Faith Yeates added 7 for CCA (15-5).
Boys basketball
MHSAA 6A-1
Tupelo 67, Starkville 57: Makhi Myles led all scorers with 24 points, but Dayveun Anderson scored 8 of his 15 points during the fourth quarter to lead the host Golden Wave in the title game.
Tupelo earned the first-round by that comes with the region title and will play either Horn Lake or Murrah at 7 p.m. Saturday at home.
Conner Rogers scored 19 points for the Yellow Jackets, who will open state tournament play at 7 p.m. Tuesday when they host DeSoto Central.
MHSAA 3A-4
Noxubee County 54, Amory 45: The host Tigers defeated the Panthers for the second time in three meetings to capture the region title in Macon.
Noxubee County will face Yazoo County at 7 p.m. Tuesday at home in the first round of the state 3A tournament.
MHSAA 1A-4
Coffeeville 92, West Lowndes 47: The Panthers lost a one-sided region final to the regular-season champion Pirates in Vardaman.
West Lowndes will open state tournament play at home Tuesday night when they face Hickory Flat, the third seed out of Region 3.
MAIS 2A-1
Delta 50, Columbus Christian 42: Joe Edwards dominated with 31 of the Rams’ 42 points, but the Rams fell to the Raiders after the teams were tied with 1:58 to play in the championship game on Saturday in Steens.
The Rams will to into the MAIS 2A Tournament beginning Wednesday at Delta Academy in Marks.
Columbus Christian 47, Regents Oxford 34: Jacob Minga scored 8 points during an 18-point third-quarter outburst that propelled the Rams to a victory in Friday’s semifinals in Steens.
Joe Edwards led CCA with 14 points, including 7 during the third quarter, while Minga finished with 13. Mason Wright contributed 10 points for the Rams (14-10), who had lost two previous meetings this season against the Lions, 66-46 on Dec. 17 and 62-53 on Jan. 21.
