Following a weekend in which he won two singles matches and was part of a key doubles victory in Mississippi State’s road wins over South Carolina and Florida, sophomore Petar Jovanovic was named Southeastern Conference Player of the Week.
Against the No. 16 Gamecocks last Friday, Jovanovic and Benito Sanchez Martinez took down the country’s No. 19 doubles pairing with a dominant 6-1 victory. In singles, he claimed a 6-4, 6-4 win against Casey Hoole to even the match 3-3. Two days later against the Gators, Jovanovic defeated Aidan Kim 6-2, 6-2 to give the Bulldogs the lead in the match.
A native of Montenegro, Jovanovic leads MSU with 23 singles wins this season and is the Bulldogs’ second SEC Player of the Week winner this season, joining senior Nemanja Malesevic. Jovanovic was named SEC Freshman of the Week three times last season and earned a spot on the conference’s all-freshman team at the end of the season.
No. 13 MSU (13-5, 5-2 SEC) is home against Ole Miss on Friday and No. 21 Alabama on Sunday.
