COLUMBUS — Mississippi University for Women hosted basketball action at Pohl gymnasium on Sunday afternoon, seeing the men’s basketball team snap a two-game skid with a 62-60 overtime win over Millsaps College.
The Owls, 3-6, came back home after three straight road games over the last two weeks, and made the most of their return in the gritty win over the Majors, 2-7.
The teams were evenly matched pretty much the whole way, with only a single possession separating them on the scoreboard in each half and the overtime period. The Owls had to fight back, though, and trailed 52-46 with just 1:46 left in the second half. A couple of successful trips to the free throw line got them within reach in the final seconds and Cam Smith hit a clutch three-pointer to tie the game with two seconds to go.
In overtime the teams traded blows, and the Owls had to hold onto a lead with 10 seconds left to secure the win.
MUW held the visitors to 32% shooting and just 2-25 from beyond the arc. They also got 27 points off the bench, with James Dukes and Trent Walker providing seven each.
Guard Chris Evans led the Owls in scoring with 18, going 9-12 from the free throw line to reward some bruising drives into the paint.
The Owls are back in action again on Tuesday, hosting Southeastern Baptist College at home at 7 p.m.
