No. 7 seed Ole Miss dominated the first half Thursday night against No. 15 seed Auburn – holding the Tigers to 27% from the field while shooting 63% themselves and taking a 28-point halftime lead – en route to a 73-57 victory in the second round of the SEC Women’s Basketball Tournament in Greenville, South Carolina. With the victory, the Rebels (22-10) advance to the tournament quarterfinals against No. 2 seed Vanderbilt.
The win snaps Ole Miss’ four-game losing streak.
Senior forward Christeen Iwuala led the Rebels with 18 points on 8 for 8 shooting from the field and grabbed nine rebounds. Senior forwards Cotie McMahon and Latasha Lattimore each finished with 13 points. Ole Miss shot 53% from the field in the game and out-rebounded Auburn 40-23.
The Rebels stifled the Tigers (15-17) from the game’s opening minutes, holding Auburn to just 2 of 14 from the field and six total points in the first quarter. Ole Miss’ dominance continued into the second, outscoring the Tigers 27-14 in the period. Freshman guard Lauren Jacobs hit a pair of 3-pointers in the final minute-plus of the half and finished with eight points. Auburn made seven field goals total in the first half.
The Rebels were held scoreless the first 3:28 of the third quarter but still led by 21 heading into the fourth. A 3-pointer from Auburn’s Sania Richardson with five minutes remaining cut the Rebels’ lead down to 12, though the Tigers didn’t get any closer than that. Auburn shot 33% from the field overall in the game.
