Noxubee County moved from fourth to third in the Class 3A rankings when the Associated Press released its weekly high school football poll Tuesday.
Eleven Mississippi media outlets, including The Commercial Dispatch and WCBI, were polled on the top five teams in each class and the top 10 overall.
The Tigers received two first-place votes and 86 points in the poll, while first-place Columbia received four first-place votes and 90 points, and second-place Seminary had three first-place votes and 88 points.
Water Valley was right behind Noxubee County in fourth place with one first-place vote and 85 points. Houston was fifth with one first-place vote and 69 points.
In other polls:
Heritage Academy held its spot as the second-ranked team among private schools. The 3-0 Patriots got two first-place votes to slot in second with 101 points behind Madison-Ridgeland Academy, which got the other nine first-place votes and totaled 108 points. Jackson Prep, which Heritage Academy beat earlier in the season, was third at 81 points.
West Point dropped from a unanimous first-place spot in Class 5A to second behind Lafayette. The Green Wave lost Friday to Louisville, which took over the top spot in the Class 4A rankings. Lafayette received seven first-place votes and 104 points; West Point got two first-place votes and 93 points. Picayune got the remaining two votes and was third at 86 points.
The Green Wave finished sixth in the overall poll after tying for first with Brandon last week. Madison Central, which beat Brandon, was a unanimous selection as the state’s top overall team.
West Lowndes is still receiving votes in the Class 1A poll. The Panthers received 15 points, behind only TCPS (34) among teams that did not crack the top five. They received 12 points last week and were behind TCPS and Biggersville. Biggersville is no longer receiving votes.
