NEW HOPE — New Hope track and field will be sending another athlete to Mississippi University for Women as senior Jakobe Brewer signed his National Letter of Intent to run track for the Owls.
Brewer primarily ran the 400-meter dash and 1,600-meter relay for the Trojans and was a multi-sport athlete at New Hope, also playing football as a defensive back and wide receiver.
“It was out of nowhere,” Brewer said. “To me, I just take it as a blessing. They took a chance on me and I just want to go there and prove to them that I can do what they want me to do.”
This season saw Brewer and the 1,600-meter relay team set the second-fastest relay time in school history at 3:41.71.
He will join fellow 400-meter dash teammate Jakobe Smith at The W, the first two athletes under boys track coach Jonathan Banks to go on to the next level.
“It’s been great,” Banks said. “He’s always been the ultimate competitor and a great kid. He did everything I ever asked him to do. He has the heart of a lion. He was one of my favorite kids ever. I’m going to miss him.”
