After helping The W’s men’s tennis team capture its first-ever conference home win last week, Ortiz Catala added one more highlight from that match to his resume and was named the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) South Division Player of the Week for the second time this season.
The Santa Cruz, Bolivia, native plays No.1 doubles and singles for The W and helped the team defeat Principia College 6-1 for the first time in program history and for the first-ever conference win at Garrett Courts.
“I couldn’t be prouder of Jorge,” head coach Hayden Embry said. “He’s grown into a leader on this team and has had an outstanding season. Winning the conference Player of the Week for the second time is a huge accomplishment. And making history as the first men’s player in our program to earn this honor speaks volumes about his work ethic and impact.”
In doubles, Catala and teammate Sandro Giangregario won their match 6-2 then he bested Principia’s Jesus Sotyo Bossa, 6-4, 6-2 in singles. The win marked Catala’s fourth straight singles victory and improved his record to 5-1 on the season.
