STARKVILLE – Mississippi State softball evened its SEC series with No. 1 Tennessee on Saturday after another pitching duel between the respective teams’ aces. A record crowd of 2,134 witnessed a memorable walk-off victory for the first conference win of the season.
MSU starter Peja Goold tossed all seven innings, allowing just two hits and striking out 10 batters in a shutout win. She went toe-to-toe with Vols pitchers Maddi Rutan and Erin Nuwer.
The Bulldogs, now 27-3 on the season, had their own struggles finding scoring chances against the Vols. Rutan and Nuwer held them scoreless through six innings before Taylor Troutman stepped up to lead off the seventh inning.
The redshirt freshman suffered a torn ACL in her first year on campus, but has emerged as a strong bat for the Bulldogs since recovering. She launched a home run to lead off the ninth inning on Friday, scoring the only run of a 3-1 loss to the Vols, but was able to repeat at the plate to win the game this time around.
The teams will meet again for Game Three on Sunday at noon at Nusz Park.
